Common Quilt Sizes Chart — With Backing & Binding Already Figured
Eight standard sizes, math done. Every number below assumes a 4" backing margin per side, 42" standard fabric, ¼" seam allowance, 108" wide-back, and 2.5" binding strips. If any of your numbers differ — a 44" bolt, a 3" margin — run your exact size in the calculator instead.

How to read this chart
- Backing needed is the top plus 8" in each direction (4" per side). Cut your backing to this size, not to the top size.
- Vertical vs horizontal piecing — neither layout always wins. On the Full/Double, horizontal saves 1¼ yards; on the Twin, vertical saves a yard. This is the single most-skipped check in backing math.
- Wide-back is one piece until king sizes, where even 108" fabric needs a seam — and still wins on yardage.
- Binding shows total length needed (perimeter + 10"), then strips cut across 42" fabric, then the fabric to buy.
Quilt sizes are not law. "Twin" tops run 64–72" wide depending on the pattern and the drop you want. These are the commonly published midpoints — measure your top, then use the chart for a fast estimate and the calculator for the number you actually buy with.
